Yesterday, ahead of Netflix releasing the nine-part series Inventing Anna, Sorokin released an essay on her experience in prison and her thoughts on the show. At just 28 years old, Sorokin was sentenced to 12 years in prison for four counts of theft of services, three counts of grand larceny and one count of attempted grand larceny. The Manhattan District Attorney cited $275,000 in unpaid bills. She would persuade those around her to cover her bills. She managed to book at The Beekman down the road, again without a credit card on file, and racked up an $11,500 bill. According to the New York Times, Sorokin settled this bill by “depositing bad checks and withdrawing funds before the bank realised what was happening.” Her bill exceeded $30,000 and there was no credit card on file. In February 2017, she booked into 11 Howard in SoHo ( a fabulous hotel and bar if you find yourself in New York City), Sorokin became known as a generous cash tipper, reportedly frequently giving staff member a hundred dollar bull for simple tasks. Fake bank statements claiming she had million in Swiss bank accounts were submitted to banks for loans, and booked restaurants using fake credit cards. Between 2013 – 2017, she moved to New York City and pretended to be a wealthy German heiress under the name of Anna Delvey and defrauded banks, hotels, restaurants, and wealthy acquaintances. “And then it gets Americanised, because you know how Americans kind of add a question at the end of everything, like, ‘you know what I mean’? Like, Europeans don’t do that, right?”Īnna Sorokin is Russian-born. “And then you know I had to add like a little Russian for certain words, it was a very bad Russian accent,” she added. “So first I had to do like a European, like a German accent, right, you know? But it’s very subtle, it’s like, you know, have a vocal fry at the end of it.” “This is a girl who is saying that she’s German but she’s really Russian, so she’s not gonna have a Russian accent,” said Garner, shifting her accent as she spoke.
